Land Transportation and Franchising and Regulatory Board Chief Maria Elena Bautista’s remarks that drivers and operators who participated in yesterday’s successful strike sends a message that is patently anti-worker and insensitive to the plight of the very constituency whose interests her agency is supposed to look after is quite uncalled for.
Bautista seems unaware or completely ignores the legitimate and inherent right of every citizen to seek redress from government, to air grievances and to hit the streets to express their sentiment. If Bautista does not understand this, then she has no right running the LTFRB.
Transport workers belonging to the National Transportworkers’ Union – Alliance of Progressive Labor (NTU-APL) successfully paralyzed traffic in places such as Mandaue, Bacolod, Iloilo, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Cotabato, General Santos and areas of Metro Manila. In tandem with other transport groups, we were able to show a rare display of such coordinated action with the impact sending shockwaves all the way to the insensitive gates of Malacañang.
The transport workers have shown their utter discontent to the way on how the government has been responding to the plight of the sectors in the public transport industry. This should serve as a warning against the LTFRB not to take any adverse action against any of the participants from Tuesday’s nationwide strike. Concentrate on the petition pending before it instead of hiding a wounded pride by trying to get back at the protestors. Should the drivers and workers who protested be subjected to repression and undue backlash from the government then the sector will have no choice but to again hit the streets to protect and advance its own.
